A small gift for you – ALMONDS

As long as I can remember come New Year’s Day I have made “Gebrannte Mandeln” (sugar-burnt-almonds) to give away to friends as a little ‘thank you’ for this and that.

Wrapped in little cornucopias simply made out of newspaper they always bring a smile to everybody’s face; with most of us being reminded of those fun-filled childhood visits to our local Christmas Markets. Although I never had an overly sweet tooth this did not stop me from nagging my own mother to buy me a portion of those deliciously smelling ‘gebrannte mandeln’ each time we visited one of those markets – until she decided it would be cheaper making them at home.
To me and many people around the globe the almond is a symbol of good fortune and happiness.

And this is one of the main reasons why today I like to present each one of you with my little gift combined with my very best wishes for

There are so many uses for this nut in the kitchen alone, too many to start listing them all here.

And although I use Almonds a lot in my kitchen, one of my own personal ‘comfort dishes’ (especially when the wretched cold/flu has hit me) is a nice bowl of rice pudding, laced with a pinch of cinnamon and a dollop or two (wicked!) of jam and some Almonds. By the way, this is also a Swedish Christmas Tradition.

Here in India we say that eating 10 Almonds a day is good for the brain (….oh yes?!) – and so I keep stocking up once a month!

And who does not know the 5 important health benefits of Almonds: they are of course as follows:
1) Almonds are a great source of healthy monounsaturated fats.
2) They are a good way to get your magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B
3) They are particularly high in antioxidant vitamin E
4) Eating Almonds instead of high carbohydrate foods has been shown to aid weight loss.
5) Vitamin E in Almonds protects your skin’s collagen to keep you looking younger for longer.

Now for you, who like to make those Almonds at home, here is this very simple recipe I have been using for so many years.
300 g Almonds (with skin on)
180 g white sugar (you can use more if you like, but ….)
2 Tbsp Cinnamon powder
The inside (pulp) of one Vanilla
40 ml water

Take a large frying pan and on medium flame heat water, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla pulp stirring continuously until sugar has molten.
Add Almonds and continue stirring until all the Almonds are well covered. Now for the next 10-15 minutes keep stirring until all the water has evaporated and the Almonds have turned nicely brown.

In the meantime line a tray with parchment paper and transfer all the Almonds onto this, spreading them out and simply let them dry for a little while. For this I put the whole lot into the oven (WITHOUT HEAT) for maybe 30 minutes or so.

That’s it – done – ready to be bottled or boxed and enjoyed.

MADRID ……

(Two weeks of non-stop festivities, noisy parades (and a visit to Santa Maria la
Real de La Almudena)

This is the Catholic Cathedral in Madrid, which was consecrated by Pope Paul II in 1993. When the capital of Spain was transferred from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, King Felipe II wanted a Cathedral for his new capital. Plans were discussed as early as the 16th century to build a Cathedral in Madrid dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, but construction did not begin until 1879. Unfortunately, when we visited Madrid and this Cathedral my normally faithful Nikon let me down, so I was not able to photograph this beautiful Church; but hopefully on our next visit…..!

Some time ago the 4 of us flew off to Madrid to spend a very happy month on a family holiday in this vibrant city. Although each of us wants to go back, especially on the invitation by friends to return for Christmas, we all decided to spend this year here at home – for once!
So for today I will just take you to some famous sightseeing spots of Madrid.

The actual Christmas celebrations are stretched over 2 weeks and include noisy (but fun) parades and dancing everywhere.

This year the whole centre of Madrid is literally bathed in lights – an incredible sight; this “spectacle” is designed by a number of well known names in the fashion- and design field using energy saving lights. The boulevards are brightly decorated and there are open-air ice rinks. Charming Christmas markets are set up in the main squares – and one must not forget to look at the most spectacular Belenes (Nativity Scenes).

Madrid is worth visiting at any time of the year – so why not try to come for Christmas?

I now offer you 3 totally different kinds of music for this season and which, I think, go well with this beautiful city. Let me start with this video entitled “Canciones de Navidad en español”

For you, who like Flamenco for Christmas I found this little musical treat. The video is entitled: “Villancico Flamenco.- “Mira Qué Bonita” por Camarón de la Isla.”

This was recorded in 2011 in Belén de la Catedral de Sevilla . Try and see this video to the end – the crib here is absolutely beautiful.

But if you prefer just to sit back with a nice glass of wine and listen to a beautiful concert, I present this feast to ones ears; it is “Concierto Navideno de la Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria”.

So, light your candles, take your time and choose the right kind of seasonal music for you and relax, but most of all – enjoy!

Dies ist der katholische Dom in Madrid, welcher in 1993 von Papst Paul II eingeweiht wurde. Als die Hauptstadt Spaniens in 1561 von Toledo nach Madrid verlegt wurde, wollte Koenig Felipe II einen Dom fuer seine neue Hauptstadt. Plaene wurden schon im 16th Jahrhundert discutiert einen Dom in Madrid zu bauen zur Widmung der Jungfrau von Almudena, aber der Bau startete erst Anfang 1879. Leider, als wir Madrid und diesen Dom besuchten, liess mich meine normalerweise getreue Nikon im Stich, so dass ich nicht in der Lage war diese wunderschoene Kirche zu photographieren; aber hoffentlich beim naechsten Besuch.
Vor einiger Zeit flogen wir 4 rueber nach Madrid fuer einen monatelangen Familien Urlaub in dieser lebendigen Stadt. Wir wollen alle wieder dort hin und ganz besonders auf die Einladung von Freunden Weihnachten mit ihnen zu verbringen, aber wir haben uns alle entschlossen, dieses Jahr mal hier zu Hause zu bleiben – zur Abwechslung!

So fuer heute moechte ich Euch nur zu einigen der sightseeings spots von Madrid nehmen.
Die eigentliche Weihnachtsfestlichkeiten strecken sich ueber 2 volle Wochen hin und man sieht viele laute Paraden, die aber grossen Spass machen; und ueberall wird getanzt!

Dieses Jahr ist die ganze Innenstadt von Madrid buchstaeblich in bunte Lichter getaucht – irre; dieses Schauspiel wurde von einigen der bekanntesten Designer in der Mode- und Design Branche entworfen. Und die Lichter in allen Farben erfuellen waehrend dieser gesamten festlichen Zeit die Stadt und sie sorgen dank Einhaltung strengster Umwelt- und Energiekriterien fuer helleres Licht bei geringerem Verbrauch.

Freiluft Schlittschuh Bahnen, Weihnachtsmaerkte auf all’ den grossen Plaetzen – und dann noch die wunderschoenen “Belenes” (die Krippen) – herrlich.
Es lohnt sich Madrid waehrend des ganzen Jahres zu besuchen – so warum versucht Ihr mal nicht zu Weihnachten dorthin zu reisen?
Ich biete Euch nun 3 ganz unterschiedliche Musikvideos fuer diese Saison und diese schoene Stadt an.

“Silverbells……… are ringing”

1-BookAs you know by now I was born in “A small town in Germany” then so aptly named by the famous novelist John le Carré in his 1968 novel of the said title.

Bonn of course has grown tremendously in the last 47 years – but certain traditions and customs , which are synonymous with this beautiful and charming university town on the banks of the almighty River Rhein and, on its east bank, the famous stretch of hills, known as ‘ Siebengebirge’ (the 7 hills)., will remain here forever – I certainly hope so very much!

Since 21 October 2015 Bonn now has a new Mayor , Ashok-Alexander Sridharan – and of course not only the people in my old ‘Homeland’ but also many people here in South India, wish him well for now and the future.

Now of course is Advent time and everywhere one can find the famous Christmas markets – in every city, town and village – never mind how big or small. As a child I used to love those markets – trying very hard (not always successfully  thou ) to be extra good at school and at home so that, as a treat, my mother would take me to those markets. And to be honest, I still would love to go there today, taking my husband Jo and our 2 big girls along – I know for sure, they too would easily fall in love with this tradition. Just in time for the ‘Weihnachtsmarkt” in Bonn comes this nice little story, send to me by a friend. The Police in Bonn came up with a simple but ingenious idea hoping to combat the pilfering of handbags by thieves. They patrol the markets, especially looking out for ladies with open or semi-open handbags. They will be stopped and a friendly discussion will follow resulting with the Police giving away little silver bells to be hung on the zipper of the handbags. So, should a pick-pocket try to do the dirty deed those little bells will ring and (hopefully) send the thief running.

Needless to say, this brilliant PR exercise by the Bonn Police turns out to be a tremendous success and maybe will even be copied by others!?

Wie Ihr ja mittlerweile wisst, bin ich in “A small town in Germany” geboren. Der beruehmte Author John le Carré gab seinem 1968 geschriebenen Bestseller diesen Titel.

Natuerlich ist Bonn in den letzten 47 Jahren sehr gewachsen – aber gewisse Traditionen und Braeuche, die gleich sind mit dieser schoenen und charmanten Universitaetsstadt , an den Ufern des maechtigen Rhein Flusses und an den Ost Ufern, die beruehmte Strecke der Huegeln, bekannt als das ‘Siebengebirge” werden fuer immer bleiben – ich hoffe es so sehr.

Seit dem 21 October 2015 hat Bonn nun einen neuen Oberbuergermeister, Ashok-Alexander Sridharan – und selbstverstaendlich wuenschen ihm die Bewohner in meinem alten Heimatland wie auch viele Leute hier in Sued Indien, alles Gute fuer jetzt und die Zukunft.

4-PolNun ist natuerlich Adventzeit und ueberall kann man jetzt die beruehmten Weihnachtsmaerkte finden – in jeder Metropole, Stadt und Dorf – macht nichts, ob gross oder klein. Als ich ein Kind war liebte ich diese Maerkte sehr – ich versuchte sehr hart (aber nicht immer erfolgreich ) ganz lieb und fleissig in der Schule und zuhause zu sein, so dass meine Mutter mich als Belohnung zu diesen Maerkten nimmt. Und um ehrlich zu sein, Ich wuerde so gerne heute noch dahin gehen, aber mit meinem Mann Jo und unseren 2 grossen Maedchen – Ich bin mir sehr sicher, dass sie sich auch in diese Tradition verlieben wuerden.

Nun gerade zur Zeit dieses Weihnachtsmarktes in Bonn kommt diese kleine nette Geschichte, die mir eine Freundin zugeschickt hat. Die Bonner Polizei hatte eine einfache aber brilliante Idee in der Hoffnung, das stehlen von Handtaschen etc. zu bekaempfen. Sie patrolieren die Maerkte, wo sie Ausschau halten auf offene oder halboffene Handtaschen. Diese Damen werden gestoppt und eine freundliche Discussion i.e. Beratung erfolgt mit dem Resultat, dass die Polizei kleine silberne Gloeckchen austeilt die an den Verschluss der Tasche befestigt werden. So, sollte ein Taschendieb seinen Trick versuchen diese kleinen Gloeckchen werden klingeln und (hoffentlich) werden sie dann den Dieb schnell verscheuchern. Natuerlich ist diese brilliante PR Uebung der Bonner Polizei ein Riesenerfolg und vielleicht wird sie bald von anderen kopiert!?
